Our beloved Graeme, Freddy to one, Dad to five plus five, Papa to ten, a brother and a friend to many.
He never thought he would ‘make old bones’ but at 74 years young, while he still had plenty of spring in his step and zest for life, he suddenly found himself facing a cancer diagnosis. A positive Bowel Screen Test had him booked for a follow-up colonoscopy, but before he could get to that procedure, an avalanche of symptoms landed him in the hospital. A month later he was gone.
Initially, a Stage IV Bowel Cancer diagnosis had him planning a chemotherapy journey and gave us hope for more time. His doctors felt something wasn’t quite right and that they didn’t have all the information needed for a treatment plan. A liver biopsy was ordered in an attempt to complete the puzzle and the results confirmed a Neuroendocrine Cancer. This aggressive, rapidly progressing cancer seemed to appear out of nowhere. It shocked him to the core, it stole many precious years from us and he fought it with every bit of strength he could rapidly muster.
We used to joke about all the things we “coulda, woulda, shoulda done”. Maybe we could have pieced together the vague symptoms he noted earlier, maybe he should have booked an earlier colonoscopy, asked for an earlier scan or had a specific test, maybe there was something we should have done differently.
By supporting NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia we hope to raise awareness and funds for much needed research into this complex group of tumours so that no one will have to lose a loved one so quickly.
