A cancer diagnosis may mean a loss of income, on top of many out of pocket costs that may not be covered by insurance. The Cancer Council Pro Bono Program connects people affected by cancer with free professional legal, financial planning, workplace or small business advice and support where they would be otherwise unable to do so due to cost, illness or other barriers.

Michelle Smerdon
Michelle Smerdon is the Manager of the Legal & Financial Support Services at Cancer Council NSW, leading a team to assist people affected by cancer in financial hardship to access free professional support through the Pro Bono Program or financial support through the Financial Assistance Services. With a legal background assisting vulnerable communities, Michelle is passionate about advocating for and ensuring access to justice for these individuals, particularly through pro bono legal and financial services.
Sophie Anderson
Sophie Anderson is a Pro Bono Case Manager at Cancer Council NSW. Sophie manages referrals for people affected by cancer who are seeking legal, financial and workplace assistance, as well as managing relationships with volunteer professionals who provide free advice and assistance. Sophie has a number of years’ experience supporting people affected by cancer and is passionate about ensuring cancer patients and their carers and families have access to free professional assistance when they need it most.

The Pro Bono Program connect people affected by cancer with a volunteer professional in the community who will provide advice and assistance. Usually, people will meet professionals at their office, however, assistance may be provided via phone and email where needed.
