On October 23rd, Counterpart, in collaboration with Grampians Health Ballarat, hosted a special Wellbeing Day for Women with Cancer at the Djila-tjarriu Community Hub in Alfredton. This free event was open to women at any stage of their cancer journey, as well as their supportive friends, family members, and carers. It was a day dedicated to support, connection, and self-care, offering a safe space for women to come together and share their experiences.
The program was designed to uplift and empower attendees through a variety of activities focused on well-being, relaxation, and education:
Qigong for Wellbeing
The day began with a calming session of Qigong, an ancient Chinese practice that combines gentle movements, breathing exercises, and meditation. This session was a great way to start the day, helping participants relax, focus, and find balance.
Holistic Sleep Solutions
Next, the focus shifted to achieving restful sleep. Experts shared valuable information, tips, and practical steps for improving sleep quality—a vital aspect of overall well-being, especially for those navigating the challenges of cancer.
Psychology and Sleep Information Session
A clinical psychologist led a session exploring the psychological aspects of sleep, offering insights into the mind-body connection. Participants gained a deeper understanding of how emotional well-being can impact sleep and received actionable strategies to support healthier sleep patterns.
Creative Expression with a Visual Artist
To wrap up the day, a visual artist guided participants through a creative activity, encouraging self-expression and mindfulness. This hands-on session allowed women to tap into their creativity!
Special Guests and Advocacy
The Wellbeing Day was honoured by the presence of Ms. Juliana Addison MP (ALP), Member for Wendouree, who stopped by to learn more about the event. NECA took the opportunity to speak with Juliana about Neuroendocrine Cancer and the critical work we do. We also provided her with a copy of the Senate Recommendations, encouraging her to reach out to Health Minister Mark Butler for a response to the Senate Inquiry. We are grateful to Juliana for taking the time to engage with us and for her support in sharing these recommendations with her colleagues.
The Ballarat Wellbeing Day was more than just an event; it was a chance for women with cancer and their supporters to connect, recharge, and be reminded that they are not alone. From holistic health practices to creative expression, every session was thoughtfully curated to address the unique challenges faced by women living with cancer.
We look forward to future Wellbeing Days and continuing to provide opportunities for support, education, and empowerment for those in the cancer community.
