The David Trophy Fundraiser

  • February 27, 2019

Unicorn Foundation is very thankful to David Spears for his creation of a very special golfing fundraiser called “The David Trophy”. All funds raised from the event are being donated to Unicorn Foundation in honour of a very special David – David Lockwood. Read full story written by David Spears below:

Thursday 21st February was the long awaited date of the inaugural David Trophy. Under grey, but mostly dry, skies a large contingent of enthusiastic Manly Golf Club Davids played an enjoyable 18 holes. Some late apologies were received for business, family and injury reasons, but on the day the field comprised an impressive array of (variously) talented golfers as signified by the scores in the attached list.

The David Trophy idea came from David Spears while chatting with three other Davids (possibly at the bar.) After receiving re-assurances from other Davids that they were all very sociable, nice guys, (modest too) and always up for a game of golf – he pressed ahead with the idea.

He received strong support for the event and also for the suggestion that a charity collection be made. At which stage, he realised that there was a very appropriate cause and charity right on our doorstep. David Lockwood was diagnosed with neuroendocrine carcinoma in January last year and passed away in May. A very young man, with a young family and who was well liked by all who knew and played with him.

David Spears met with David’s wife, Katherine Staunton and she was touched and pleased to agree with the suggestion that we dedicate our inaugural David Trophy day to David Lockwood. She also agreed that it would be most appropriate to donate the funds we raised to The Unicorn Foundation.

This Foundation is dedicated to patient and family support as well as research into Neuroendocrine (NET) Cancers. The inaugural David golfers hope and agree that to honour David Lockwood, all future funds raised by events flowing on from this first Trophy should be donated to Unicorn Foundation.

Following the success of this event, the Davids have issued a challenge to all other names at Manly Golf Club – Michael, John, Peter, other? Including the ladies – Susan, other? (Contact David Spears)

We will also be issuing a challenge to other clubs to send a team of 4 Davids to play at MGC in a Greater David Trophy.
