Famous People Who Have Passed from NETs: Wilko Johnson

  • March 15, 2024

On November 21, 2022, the music world experienced a significant loss with the passing of Wilko Johnson, the influential guitarist and songwriter best known for his work with the British R&B band Dr. Feelgood.

Renowned for his electrifying stage presence and distinctive choppy playing style, Johnson left an indelible mark on the punk and blues music scenes.

Beyond his musical legacy, Wilko Johnson’s cause of death has brought attention to a relatively lesser-known and understood disease: neuroendocrine tumours (NETs).

Wilko Johnson’s cause of death: a battle with NETs

Wilko Johnson was diagnosed with pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (pNETs), which ultimately led to his passing. Unlike the more common types of pancreatic cancer, neuroendocrine tumours are rare and arise from the neuroendocrine cells that are scattered throughout the body.

These cells are responsible for producing hormones that regulate various bodily functions, and when they turn cancerous, they can lead to a variety of symptoms, making the disease difficult to diagnose early.

When was Wilko Johnson diagnosed with a pNET?

Johnson’s diagnosis initially came with a grim prognosis – he was told he had only a few months to live after his diagnosis in January 2013. Remarkably, he defied these odds, and survived for almost 10 years after diagnosis.

During this time, he continued to perform and record music while embracing his life and art with a newfound passion. His journey with the disease was one of remarkable resilience and positivity, inspiring patients and families also battling NETs.

Wilko Johnson’s legacy of understanding

The cause of Wilko Johnson’s death shines a spotlight on neuroendocrine tumours and the challenges they present. NETs can develop in different parts of the body, including the pancreas, lung, and gastrointestinal tract, and because these tumours can be slow-growing and symptoms can be vague or attributed to other conditions, they are often diagnosed at an advanced stage.

Wilko Johnson’s public battle with NETs has played a crucial role in raising awareness about this type of cancer. By sharing his story, he contributed to a greater understanding and increased visibility of NETs, which can lead to earlier diagnosis and better outcomes for others.

The impact of Wilko Johnson’s death on NET Awareness

The loss of Wilko Johnson was felt deeply across the music scene, his local community, and far beyond. However, his experience with neuroendocrine tumours has helped to highlight the need for research, better diagnostic tools, and exploration of cutting-edge treatments for NETs. His legacy includes not only his contributions to music but also his impact on raising awareness about a disease that is often overlooked and misunderstood.

Remembering Wilko Johnson and continuing the fight against NETs

As we remember Wilko Johnson for his unforgettable contributions to music, we also acknowledge his role in bringing attention to neuroendocrine tumours. His battle with NETs and his ability to face the disease with courage and positivity have left a lasting impression.

In honouring his memory, we are reminded of the importance of awareness, research, and advocacy in the fight against NETs. Wilko Johnson’s legacy continues to inspire those affected by neuroendocrine tumours and encourages us to foster a deeper understanding and commitment to finding better treatments for this complex disease.
