Nets for NETS Day November 9 2012

On Friday November 9 Australians were asked to flash some leg by sporting a pair of fishnets as part of the Unicorn Foundation’s Nets for NETs Day.

Nets for NETs Day was created by the Unicorn Foundation ahead of World NET Cancer Day (Saturday, 10 November) to raise awareness for neuroendocrine tumours (NETs), an increasingly common, yet poorly understood form of cancer that affects men and women aged 13 to 80. The day also aims to draw attention to the need for timely diagnosis, and access to treatment and care for all patients.

To ensure as many Australians as possible were donning diamond-shaped hosiery, the Unicorn Foundation, with the help of our fantastic volunteers, handed out fishnets on the streets of Melbourne and Sydney on the Friday morning (7.30am-10.00am), encouraging passers-by to donate a gold coin and add the fashionable accessory to their Friday attire.

I think all those involved have a newfound respect for those that rattle cans at train stations and traffic lights!

Special thanks to companies such as the Cancer Council Victoria, Tupperware, The Defence Force Australia, The Maura Fay Group, Ipsen, Novartis, Pfzier, Bastion and Undertowmedia for getting into the spirit of the day and raising not only awareness but funds for NET patients.

Ambassador Craig McLauchlan donned the fishnets again from his famous role as Frank-N-Furter in the Rocky Horror Picture show to get behind the cause, and we were lucky enough to have Dr Kjell Oberg, international NET expert from Uppsala University in Melbourne and he also looked fantastic in a pair of knee highs!

Nearly $10,000 was raised on the day by patients, supporters and the general public and we thank everyone for being involved.

Watch this space for next year – Friday November 8!
