Medical Ambassador

NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia is thrilled to welcome Professor Stephen Clarke as our first Medical Ambassador, a trailblazing clinician, researcher, and passionate advocate whose has dedicated his career to cancer care in Australia and beyond.

Stephen is a Medical Oncologist at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney and Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney. He also serves as Director of the North Star Van Norton Poche Cancer Trials Unit in Northern Sydney Local Health District, a hub driving cutting-edge clinical research that brings new treatment options to patients.

After completing his medical oncology training at Royal North Shore Hospital, Stephen pursued a PhD at the prestigious Phase I Trials Unit of the Institute of Cancer Research and Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital in London, before returning to Australia in 1994 with world-class expertise in his field. His clinical and research focus spans thoracic and gastrointestinal cancers, including neuroendocrine tumours (NETs).

The impact of Stephen’s research speaks for itself: he has attracted over $30 million in competitive grant funding, contributed to more than 410 publications, and earned a Google Scholar h-index of 89, placing him in the top 2% of cited researchers globally in 2024.

His extraordinary contributions to medicine have been recognised with some of Australia’s most prestigious honours, including an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2011, the Medical Oncology Group of Australia (MOGA) Cancer Achievement Award (2016), the Eric Susman Prize (2013), the College Medal (2019), and the John Sands Medal (2020) from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.

Stephen understands first-hand how vital advocacy is for the NET community. He has seen the difference that awareness, recognition, and research investment can make for people living with this challenging condition — and he is committed to championing that cause as a proud NECA Ambassador.
