Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital Preceptorship

Neuroendocrine Cancer Australia recently took part in an important event aimed to promote, collaboration among healthcare providers, strengthen support, and enhance care for patients with haematological and oncological conditions which was held at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital on Saturday the 19th of July 2025.

Our goal was to broaden understanding of NETs within the GP community and offer support to those caring for patients living with this complex and often misunderstood cancer. Representing us were Dana Hart, one of our dedicated NET specialist nurses, and Therese Townsend, a member of our Consumer Advisory Group (CAG) who brings invaluable lived experience with neuroendocrine cancer.

It was encouraging to see strong interest from GPs in learning more about NETs—particularly the common signs and symptoms to watch for in a primary care setting. We also highlighted the importance of using the Optimal Care Pathway as a guide for early testing and referrals, and for knowing where to turn for further support.

Participating in the RBWH preceptorship highlights the critical role of NECA and underscores the ongoing need to increase awareness and education around neuroendocrine tumours in Australia, particularly by introducing this knowledge to general practitioners earlier in their careers.
