NET specialists in Australia

Being diagnosed with a neuroendocrine cancer can feel overwhelming, especially when many patients have spent months or years searching for answers. Because NETs are complex and often misunderstood, treatment is often best guided by clinicians who understand the unique biology, symptoms, and long-term management of neuroendocrine cancer.

Working with a NET specialist can help ensure you receive accurate diagnosis, personalised treatment planning, and coordinated care throughout your journey.

NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia maintains a NET Specialist Registry to help patients find experienced clinicians across Australia. This registry recognises practitioners who have demonstrated expertise in neuroendocrine cancer, participate in multidisciplinary teams, and maintain ongoing education in NET management. It exists to support patients seeking second opinions, specialised care, or access to advanced treatments.

Note: NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia derives no financial benefit from the practitioners listed in the registry. The registry exists solely to help Australian patients identify clinicians experienced in neuroendocrine cancer care. Treatment approaches may differ between doctors, and patients are encouraged to make their own informed decisions about which clinician best aligns with their needs.

Find a Specialist

Find experienced doctors and multidisciplinary teams across Australia who specialise in diagnosing and treating neuroendocrine cancer.

Being affected by neuroendocrine cancer can be an extremely challenging experience, both for patients, and those supporting them.

Many patients with neuroendocrine cancer also experience a loss of faith and trust in a medical system that they feel may have misdiagnosed and unwittingly mismanaged their disease – a result of neuroendocrine cancers being relatively unknown and misunderstood.

It is critically important for individuals with neuroendocrine cancer to develop and maintain supportive working relationships with NET specialists who have expert knowledge and understanding of their complex cancer. This relationship is central to improving the quality of NET patient care and clinical outcomes.

NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia NET Specialist Registry is a resource that acknowledges those medical practitioners who are experienced in the management of neuroendocrine cancers and who fulfill certain criteria that NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia has applied.

These criteria are:

  • A qualified medical practitioner (without any restrictions) and legitimate interest in neuroendocrine cancer.
  • Has a reasonable volume of practice of neuroendocrine cancer patients
  • Has been involved in recent and ongoing education/CME which includes exposure to neuroendocrine cancer related topics
  • Has direct involvement with a dedicated or state-wide neuroendocrine cancer multi-disciplinary team/tumour board
  • Has a relationship with a hospital(s) that has the ability to provide a comprehensive nuclear medical service including provision of PET scanning and peptide receptor radionuclide therapies
  • Has direct involvement in neuroendocrine cancer related research

Involvement in the NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia NET Specialist Registry is evolving and will continue to list those medical practitioners who have experience in the management of neuroendocrine cancers.

Please note that this list is ongoing, and there may be other qualified specialists not yet listed.

If there are Doctors who you believe fit the criteria of being a NET Specialist please contact NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia at info@neuroendocrine.org.au or have them fill out the online registration form and provide their CV.

What is a NET specialist?

A NET specialist is not one single type of doctor. Instead, it refers to healthcare professionals who have advanced experience in diagnosing and treating neuroendocrine cancers. Because NETs can affect many organs and systems, patients are usually supported by a multidisciplinary team rather than one clinician alone.

NET specialists may include:

  • Medical oncologists who coordinate cancer treatments
  • Endocrinologists who manage hormone-related symptoms
  • Gastroenterologists and respiratory physicians who treat organ-specific disease
  • Surgeons with expertise in pancreatic, thoracic, hepatobiliary, or endocrine surgery
  • Nuclear medicine physicians who oversee specialised scans and treatments such as PRRT
  • Genetic Specialists
  • Radiation Oncologists
  • Specialist nurses, dietitians, and counsellors experienced in NET care

This team-based approach helps ensure that both tumour control and quality of life are addressed.

Why seeing a NET specialist matters

Neuroendocrine cancers often behave very differently from more common cancers. Some grow slowly for many years, while others progress quickly. Symptoms may be vague or hormone-related, which can make diagnosis challenging.

Patients frequently report feeling misdiagnosed or misunderstood before reaching a specialist centre. Access to a NET-experienced clinician can help with:

  • Accurate interpretation of pathology and imaging
  • Understanding tumour grade, stage, and hormone activity
  • Access to treatments such as somatostatin analogues or PRRT
  • Long-term surveillance and symptom management
  • Coordination across multiple medical disciplines

Developing a strong relationship with a knowledgeable healthcare team can improve confidence, communication, and clinical outcomes.

NET specialist centres and multidisciplinary teams

In Australia, neuroendocrine cancer care is typically reviewed and discussed through specialist multidisciplinary teams (MDTs). These teams meet regularly to review complex cases and develop individualised treatment plans.

Many patients are treated at centres that offer:

  • Advanced nuclear medicine imaging, including PET scans
  • Access to PRRT and theranostic treatments
  • Dedicated NET clinics
  • Research and clinical trial opportunities

Examples of centres with established NET services include large tertiary hospitals and cancer centres with integrated oncology and nuclear medicine programs. Your local specialist or the NECA registry can help identify appropriate services near you.

NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia support services

Beyond helping you locate specialists, NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia offers a range of national support services designed specifically for people living with NETs.

These include:

  • NET Nurse Service (1300 287 363), providing education, emotional support, and practical guidance via telehealth
  • Access to a NET-experienced dietitian, supporting nutritional needs and symptom management
  • NET specialist counselling offering psychosocial support tailored to neuroendocrine cancer
  • Patient resources, fact sheets, and educational programs

These services are available regardless of where you live in Australia and can help you navigate complex treatment decisions with confidence.

How the NET specialist registry works

The NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia NET Specialist Registry acknowledges medical practitioners who meet specific criteria related to NET care. These may include:

  • A qualified medical practitioner with demonstrated interest in neuroendocrine cancers
  • Active involvement in NET multidisciplinary teams
  • Ongoing education or research participation related to NETs
  • Access to hospitals with nuclear medicine services and advanced treatments

The registry is provided as an informational resource for patients seeking expert advice or second opinions. It does not endorse any individual doctor, and patients are encouraged to discuss treatment approaches openly with their healthcare team.

How to find a NET specialist near you

You can search for specialists by state using the NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia registry. Many clinicians also offer telehealth consultations, allowing patients in regional or remote areas to access expert advice without travelling long distances.

When choosing a specialist, it may help to ask:

  • Do they participate in a NET multidisciplinary team?
  • Do they have experience managing hormone-related symptoms?
  • Can they refer to centres offering advanced treatments like PRRT?
  • Are support services such as dietitians or NET nurses available?

Finding the right specialist is an important step in building a care plan that supports both treatment outcomes and quality of life.
