NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia is proud to share that one of our community members, Danielle, is featured in The Faces of HTA Reform, a new booklet from the Patient Voice Initiative (PVI) that brings together real stories from patient communities across Australia.
Danielle, thank you. Thank you for giving your time and sharing your story so openly, and for advocating so strongly on behalf of neuroendocrine cancer patients across Australia. Your voice helps decision-makers understand what is at stake for people with lesser known cancers, and we are incredibly grateful.
What is HTA reform?
Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is the process Australia uses to decide which medicines and medical technologies are funded, and how quickly. The independent HTA Policy and Methods Review, the first major review of the system in around 30 years, concluded in 2024. It aims to address inequities in access, shorten the time it takes for treatments to be funded, and make the process easier for consumers and clinicians to navigate. For people affected by lesser known cancers, who often have fewer treatment options and less visibility, how this reform is carried out can make a real difference. The Patient Voice Initiative is a patient-led, multi-stakeholder group that works to strengthen patient input in health policy and HTA. Through its partner program, it supports patient organisations like NECA with training, resources and a collective platform, and it is working to make sure the patient and consumer voice is heard as reform is implemented. The Faces of HTA Reform booklet is part of that effort, showing decision-makers that this is about people, not just process.
