Many thanks to David Spears who once again organised a brilliant “David Trophy” day. Thank you for all the hard work that went in to creating and facilitating this very special day.
Learn more about the day from David’s summary below:
This was the fifth event in The David Trophy series and the Davids arrived from near and far, relishing the camaraderie that can only exist in a group as tight as the David community.
As usual, the prize table looked intriguing with its rich display of decorative arts. The Michaelangelo David statue, displaying a physique admittedly not seen elsewhere in the Champions Bar, gained the admiring glances of one group of lady golfers who drew closer:
“Oh, so all the players are called David – is that right?”
“Yes – “ replied Dave “ – is your name David?”
“No, my name’s Sheila…”
“Well, we’ve got a few Sheilas in the group.” [With apologies to Sheila.]
While this exchange was occurring a small melodrama was unfolding in the Locker Room. Unwrapping their newly delivered David Trophy 2026 shirts several players discovered that the shirt supplier (ordinarily a very smart and reliable brand) had, without notice, decided to reduce the sizeing of their products. Seemingly, last year’s L size had become M or even S. Despite causing much concern and confusion in the group, the grumbling soon changed to confident assertions that a strict regimen of diet and exercise over the next 12 months will justify the shirtmakers new size policy.
Next, outside for the team photograph, in which, despite the best efforts of Stephen in the Golf Shop, half the group are barely visible. Still, obviously determined to make their presence felt where it counts – on the course – they made their way to their allotted starting hole.
No matter what the elements and tides throw at them, nothing can stop Course Superintendent Brenden and his team from producing an awesome and perfectly manicured course. The Davids were pleased and proud to treat the course with the care and pride it deserves.
Each player brought their own blend of skill and application to the afternoon. (Read into that what you will.) The humidity may have affected some who played a little below their best, but not David Senior of Cromer. David eagled the par 4 Ninth two years ago and impressed once again by winning the David Trophy this year with 38 points.
Second, and picking up the Unicorn Trophy for the second year running, was David Gregory of Monash with 35 points, pipping event organiser David Spears on a countback.
We recognise David Wolski who overcame major surgery and minor hardships to join us on the day. His lack of match practice was evident and he went home (proudly) with The Goliath Trophy.
The newly introduced David Lockwood Trophy for the best Gross Stableford score memorialises one of our finest Daves. It was won by Men’s Major Pennants Team Manager and club stalwart, Dave Brown with 29 points.
But wait….as the prize giving ceremony concluded and the Davids settled back into their hard-earned refreshments, could that have been the faint whiff of “shock-horror” emanating from one of the tables? Did someone make the observation that a non-member of Manly Golf Club had won the day? Unfazed by his position at the very low end of the field, one of our noble battlers declared: “We are all winners! The David community is strong and united. It simply doesn’t matter which club you belong to.” (If he didn’t say that, he should have.)
There were 28 Davids on the day. Visitors came from Cromer, Elanora, Leura, Long Reef, The Lakes,Monash, Northbridge, North Ryde, Oatlands and Toronto. The Davids thanked the club and all staff for their kind work and assistance.
Special thanks were offered to the prize donors – Dad & Dave’s Brewery, Drummond Golf Dee Why, Phil Baird and the Manly Golf Shop and Burundulla, Mudgee wine donated by David Ian Taylor. Their prizes enabled the Davids to raise over $1600 for Neuroendocrine Cancer Australia.
