NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia (NECA) receives inaugural Government Grant for Specialist Support Services.

  • July 2, 2024

We are pleased to advise that NECA was one of 12 not-for-profit organisations that were granted funds to increase specialist support services.

As we strive towards equity for NET patients, and acknowledge there is still a long way to go, we are delighted to announce that within the next 8 weeks NECA will be able to offer the following services (free of charge) to NET patients and Carers: –

Counselling: This service will be available to patients and carers.

NET Specialist Dietitian: Many NET patients rely on a nutritional eating program in order alleviate symptoms of NETs such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea and malabsorption. We are pleased that we have secured one of Australia’s leading NET Dietitians who will be available to patients/carers at no charge for an initial consult and then up to 2 follow up consultations. The Dietitian will be available every alternative Monday from mid-August 2024. Appointments can be made via the NET Nurses.

With this Grant we will ensure that each of the states have equitable support from the funds that NECA have been granted. More information to come in the 25/26 financial year.

Recommendation 18 of the recent Senate Inquiry in to rare and less common cancers including neuroendocrine cancer stated that the committee recommends that the Australian Government provide appropriate funding to key cancer advocacy organisations supporting patients with rare and less common cancers, including neuroendocrine cancer, by providing informative resources and support services that: increase health literacy; empower patients to make informed decisions regarding their health; and are culturally appropriate and accessible in a variety of languages.

Also, Recommendation 21 states “The Australian Government explore the provision of at least one specialised neuroendocrine tumour nurse, and paediatric cancer nurse, in each Australian jurisdiction.” These are the first steps to achieving these goals.

Once the Australian Cancer Plan and the Australian Cancer Nurse Navigation Program have been implemented, we are hoping this will mean more referrals for NECA earlier in their diagnosis so that NET patients can navigate the health system for the appropriate care.

Keep an eye out in our Newsletter and social media as we introduce you to the Counsellor and NET Dietitian.
