I want to raise awareness and support research for this foundation, NeuroEndocrine Cancer Australia. So I thought what better way to do it by shaving my hair. My hair is something that I have allowed to define me so for me sacrificing my hair is a small price to help assist others.
Indie and Kenzie suffer from a genetic cancer known as MEN2a (Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2a) unfortunately they happen to have an aggressive mutation of MEN2a.
Indie had a Thyroidectomy at the age of 24 months, Kenzie is following suit and being watched closely after her blood test results came back extremely high and abnormal. It is likely she may need a Thyroidectomy at an earlier age than Indie otherwise it will also be at 2 years of age.
After a thyroidectomy the risk of cancer does not disappear it just reduces as this genetic mutation can and will cause cancers elsewhere in the body.
Throughout their childhood there is and will be doctors and specialist appointments, countless blood tests and monitoring every 3 to 6 months until the are adults. Once they are adults they have on going tests every second year to watch and make sure nothing else Abnormal is occurring.
Then when, and if, our girls decide to have children the have a 50% chance to pass the gene mutation on to their children.
I don’t physically experience the challenges my partner and children face so to show support to them and others I am wanting to shave my head to raise awareness and assist with ongoing research into neuroendocrine cancers and support for families dealing and living with these diseases
