University of South Australia -Volunteers needed nationally.

  • April 27, 2022

Are you undergoing, about to undergo, or recently completed treatment?

About the study

Researchers at The University of South Australia are investigating the effects of listening to fiction on the emotional wellbeing of people undergoing cancer treatment.

Participation in this study will involve

  • Listening to fiction or narrative non-fiction chosen to match your individual tastes, read to you by a competent reader, for 30-40 minutes, weekly for 6 weeks at a location that suits you (including your home, a UniSA campus, local library or via Zoom for rural/regional/interstate volunteers)
  • Filling in before and after wellbeing surveys
  • Participants will be invited to attend a short interview at the conclusion of the program.

You may be eligible to participate if you

  • Are over 18 years old
  • Are fluent in English
  • Have no currently diagnosed mental health condition
  • Are undergoing, about to undergo, or recently completed (up to 12 months ago) cancer treatment.

Benefits

  • Participating in this study may boost your emotional wellbeing by reintroducing (or introducing) the joy of reading and all the therapeutic benefits that come with it.
  • You will contribute to research on bibliotherapy as a potential tool in the integrative oncology toolkit.

If you are interested in participating or would like more information about the study please email: unisa.researchvolunteers@unisa.edu.au or phone: 8302 1365.

This project has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of South Australia – Protocol Number 204027
